Cleaning Tips

You’ll find some simple tips to help you tackle common cleaning problems below. If you don’t see the information you need, or if you’re at all unsure how best to proceed, please call us on 0203 603 3920 or contact us here and we’ll be happy to help.

First Aid Stain Treatment

Accidents will happen. If something gets spilled on your carpet, take prompt action to prevent staining. You will need some clean white absorbent cloth or tissue, and the four basic solutions listed below. (Please check that your fabric is colourfast, and safe to clean, by testing all solutions in an inconspicuous area before application).

Dry Cleaning Solution – Surgical Spirit.

Detergent Solution – One teaspoonful of gentle detergent for washing woollens to half a pint (0.3 litres) of warm water.

Detergent and Vinegar Solution – Add one tablespoonful of white (not malt) vinegar to the Detergent Solution.

Ammonia Solution – One teaspoonful of branded household ammonia (available from hardware stores), to one cup of warm water.
Tackle the stains as follows:

Alcohol, Coffee, Tea, Liquid Foods and Urine. Blot up surplus spillage. Use Detergent and Vinegar Solution. Work from the outer edge of the stain inwards, using a little at a time, blotting up with dry cloths frequently. See below for final rinse procedure.
Chocolate, Sweets, Blood, Glue, Egg, Ice Cream, Milk, Soft Drinks, and Vomit. Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. Use a Detergent Solution starting at the outer edge. Blot dry. Follow up with Ammonia Solution. Blot dry. See below for final rinse procedure.
Solids, Fats, Tar, Chewing Gum, Oil, Ointment and Shoe Polish. Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. Use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by Detergent and Vinegar Solution. Blot dry. See below for final rinse procedure.

Unknown stains. Scrape up or blot surplus spillage. Use a Dry Cleaning Solvent followed by clean luke warm water. Blot dry. If further treatment is needed, use either Detergent Solution or Detergent and Vinegar Solution. Blot dry. See below for final rinse procedure.

Final Rinse Procedure
This rinse procedure is applicable to all the above methods of the stain removal. Simply mix one-part white vinegar and four-part water. Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stained area. Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture. Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) over the affected area and place a weight, such as a book, directly on top. This will help moisture residue to soak into the towels. Leave overnight and repeat if necessary.

Do not soak area with water to dilute the stain. Yes, it will probably dilute it but it will magnify the problem by moving your problem deeper into the carpet backing and underlay. Try and resolve the problem by tackling it closer to the surface. This will accelerate the drying time which is crucial.

Do not rub the area to loosen up the stain. All this does is breaks up the fabric construction. You may succeed by removing a stain but you will also break up the carpet pile or fabric.

Different strokes for different folks…

When vacuuming the carpet, stroke the carpet from at least 2 different directions. The reason is quite simple. The vacuum head (especially if it has a revolving cylindrical brush) moves the pile in only one direction. By facing the vacuum head in a different direction, the pile will be lifted again, which will release even more dirt from the carpet. Result!


Q. How to prepare a property for professional end of tenancy cleaning?

This actually is quite easy. You don’t have to do any special preparations. Just ensure that your belongings are taken away and all the drawers are empty, the appliances are turned off and there is running water and electricity. Our professionals will do the rest.

Q. How long will it take before my carpet is dry?

It normally takes about 2 hours before the carpet is dry and you can walk on it again – however, when using Scotchgard, we recommend that you wait at least 4 hours to ensure the product has firmly sealed the fabric.

Q. Why should I protect my carpet with Scotchgard?

Scotchgard is the industry leading carpet protection product. Scotchgard ensures your carpet will last longer, protecting it from stains and keeping its colour bright. All our cleaning technicians are equipped with variety of cleaning protectors to suit every fabric type, and will perform a thorough application of stain protector upon request. The use of Scotchgard is known to improve the longevity of any upholstery/carpet and will dramatically increase the interval before another professional cleaning is needed. The protector helps keep spills from becoming hard-to-remove stains. It repels liquids, so spills can be cleaned up quickly and easily. Dirt is more easily picked-up, and fewer passes are required with the vacuum. With Scotchgard your upholstery/carpet will be protected from damage caused by sun, feet, pets and children in the future and will help to preserve its original colour.

Q. When can your cleaners come?

We have cleaning teams working throughout London, and we can usually provide you with a cleaner the same day if you call in the morning. However, we do recommend you book in advance.

Q. What are your working hours?

We are very flexible. On weekdays we start at 7am and the latest cleaning we can do is generally around 6:30pm. On weekends our start time is 9am. You can always schedule a cleaning appointment slightly earlier or later, book early and we will make an appointment that suits you best.

Q. Is there any guarantee that you will clean the property up to standard?

Our End of Tenancy Cleaning is a guaranteed service. If the cleaners missed a spot, or there is anything that you are not happy with, you can always call our office within 48 hours or before tenants move into the property, and the cleaning team will come back to do a free-of-charge re-clean of the missed spots.

Q. Do the cleaners speak English?

All of our cleaners are English speaking, so you can give them instructions before the cleaning. If you have any questions or special requirements regarding the cleaning or the nationality of our cleaners, we encourage you to call our office staff.

Q. Do I have to defrost my fridge and freezer in advance?

It would be greatly appreciated if you defrost your fridge, freezer or deep freeze in advance. This will help speed up the cleaning and deodorizing process, leaving them in the best possible condition.

Q. Do I have to pay extra for any congestion charges or parking fees?

The price quoted is all-inclusive of taxes and services. The only thing that might apply on top of the price, that’s the congestion/ parking fee. However, if you provide a free parking slot, you won’t pay anything in addition.

Q. Do you clean windows from the outside?

Window cleaning from the inside is included in the price quoted for one-off or end of tenancy cleaning. If you wish to have the outer windows cleaned and they are reachable from the ground or inside the property, we are happy to clean them for a small charge.

Q. Can you clean sea grass, sisal, rayon, or expensive silk or hand-wrought carpets?

Carpets and upholstery of these materials are typically very difficult to clean. We offer a Professional Carpet and Upholstery Dry Cleaning service specially tailored for these kinds of hard-to-clean fabrics. Dry cleaning chemicals are more costly and the process takes more time, but our experience and care in cleaning sea grass, sisal, rayon, silk and hand-wrought carpets and upholstery make it well worth it.

Q. Do you provide the cleaning materials and equipment?

For End of Tenancy Cleaning, and Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning we do provide all materials free-of-charge. For the one-off Deep Cleanings we do not provide the materials and the equipment. However, if you would like materials to be included for this type of job, it would only cost you additional £15.

Q. What if I booked them for 4 hours and they need more time, or if they finish earlier?

For cleaning on a per hour per cleaner rate, you are charged only for the time taken in cleaning the property. If it requires more time, the cleaners will stay as long as they are able to, with respect for other appointments. If the cleaners finish earlier than expected you will be charged only for the time necessary to clean the property.

Q. How do you clean carpets?

If required, first we hoover the carpets. The first step in the steam-cleaning process is pre-treatment, which helps to fully remove any stains. After that we shampoo the whole carpet and steam clean it using high water-pressure. This extracts about 90% of the moisture and any dirt or loose particles. Following the cleaning itself, we deodorize the cleaned areas and, finally, use an industrial fan to minimize the time it takes for the carpets to dry.

Q. Do you clean the oven?

Yes. Cleaning of the oven, cupboards and other appliances, inside and out, is included in the price for Professional End of Tenancy Cleaning.
